AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has awarded scholarships to 30 engineering students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), Obuasi Campus, increasing the number of recipients from 20 in the previous cohort.
The awards, for the 2026/2027 academic year, cover full academic fees, accommodation and a laptop for each beneficiary. They support academically capable students from the mine’s host communities who face financial difficulties.
The second cohort comprises 16 continuing students and 14 first-year students, bringing the total number supported since the scheme began to 50.
The scholarships were presented at a ceremony at Anyinam Lodge in Obuasi under the company’s Community Scholarship Scheme, part of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
The Scholarship Scheme Committee, chaired by Mr David Twumasi-Ankrah, selected the beneficiaries from 72 applicants after assessing their eligibility against the scheme’s published criteria and conducting interviews.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Christian Agyare, the Provost of the College of Science, Professor Philip Antwi-Agyei, said the scholarship reflected a shared commitment to ensuring that financial constraints did not prevent talented students in mining communities from pursuing higher education.
He urged the beneficiaries to regard the support as an investment in their future professional contributions, rather than simply a reward for past academic achievement.
Professor Antwi-Agyei encouraged them to maintain academic discipline, uphold integrity, use the University’s facilities and support one another. He also reminded them of their responsibility to contribute to the development of their communities.
The Director of Sustainability at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, represented the mine’s Managing Director, Ing. Samuel Boakye Pobee.
Other attendees included KNUST Registrar Mr Benjamin Boampong Owusu; the Dean of the Obuasi Campus, Professor Lawrence Darkwah; and the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive.
Traditional leaders, queen mothers, members of the clergy, staff of both institutions, parents and guardians also attended.
